Our Curriculum
Kindergarten Curriculum
The kindergarten curriculum focuses on reading, math, science, and social studies.
Successful children will use the letters and sounds of the alphabet for reading and writing to share information and record their thoughts.
They will understand numbers and use number sense in solving problems. The children will also learn and experience the world around them. All will learned with developmentally appropriate activities for kindergarten students. There will be classroom instructions, projects, center activities, cooperative groups, and field trips.
Our curriculum is fast paced and intensive. Therefore, it is very important that the teacher and parent work closely together to help your child be successful in school. The agenda is an integral part of the communication between school and home as well as home and school. Each week there will be a homework assignment page in the agenda with the academic focus for the week, important announcements, daily homework assignments, and most days your child’s behavior will be marked with a sticker (exceptional), a check mark (fair) or a sad face (misbehaved).
Please do the homework assignment each day and sign the agenda! If you need to contact me, please write a note in the agenda.
The BEST THING you can do to help your child in school is to READ TOGETHER.
The decodable books, books with CDs, and copied books for your child will be sent home for use. These books will be in the homework folder and will need to be returned to school. I ask the students to record 15 minutes of reading time EACH EVENING on the family reading sheet! Students will also be recording their reading time at school.
The SeeSaw program from Scholastic Books
Children love to choose their own books to read and to have their own home library. Your child will have the opportunity each month to build their own library by purchasing books from SeeSaw. Watch for the fliers for purchasing books.

Voluntary PreKindergarten
VPK stands for the Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Program.
Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) gives children a jump start by preparing them for school and enhancing their pre-reading, pre-math, language and social skills. By developing the skills children need to become strong readers and students at an early age, children are more likely to be successful in school. VPK classrooms offer high-quality programs that include high literacy standards, developmentally appropriate curricula, manageable class sizes, and qualified teachers.
If you live in Florida and have a child who turns 4 years of age by September 1, your child is eligible for Florida’s FREE VPK program.
Benefits of early education and the VPK program
Peace Lutheran School offers VPK for children who are 4 years old on or before September 1st of the current year. Your child can at-tend for a half day at no cost to you regardless of income.
Regular attendance and punctuality are requirements in VPK. VPK hours are 8:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m. Your child may arrive as early as 8:00 at no additional charge. Children who need to arrive at school from 7:30 to 8:00 will be charged $25 a month. Early morning care, beginning at 7:00 a.m. is an additional $25 each month.
Afternoon care is offered for a very reasonable rate to you. The monthly charge will be $200 for your child to stay until 3:30 p.m. If you child need to stay until 5:30 the monthly charge will be $225.

Benefits of early education and the VPK program
- The most important growth and development in the brain happens by the age of five.
- The early years are the learning years. A child’s ability to be attentive and to follow directions emerges in the early years. Structured early learning fosters these abilities for later success in school and in life.
- Pre-K prepares children to be ready for school. Children who participate in high-quality early childhood education programs develop better language skills, score higher in school-readiness tests and have better social skills and fewer behavioral problems once they enter school. They are also better prepared for Kindergarten, especially in the areas of pre-reading, pre-math and social skills.
- Pre-K promotes a love of learning in children. Pre-K enhances what a child learns at home and instills a love of life-long learning.
